Antique Stamped Spoons

Are you ready to stamp some spoons?
All you need is:
Spoons (mine are just silver plated. Not solid silver. I got them 3 for $1.00 at an antique store.)
Hammer (metal or rubber mallet)
Hard Surface (I just used the ground outside)
Metal Stamps (They are also called  'Letter Punch.' you can buy these online, Hobby Lobby, and even Harbor Freight)
Permanent Marker (fine tip worked for me)
Nail Polish Remover + Paper towel
and Last of All... Practice.

Step 1. Flatten your spoon.
I placed a towel on cement and hammered away. If you are using a metal hammer be careful when hammering the front of the spoon. Just fold a corner of the towel over it to prevent scrapes.

 Step 2. Stamp your spoons
This works out best if you start with the middle letters and work your way out. When you are stamping, Make sure you have a firm grip on the stamp. Push down hard. Don't be timid. If you are, the stamp will move between hammer hits.
Step 3+4. Color in your letters with permanent marker and wipe excess off with nail polish remover.
My spoons are very aged and the nail polish remover hasn't had an effect on the finish of the silverware.
And PRESTO! You're done!
My 'y' is a little messed up because Abigail was making friends with some ants. But with practice I hope to get better! I'm thinking Christmas presents!

  3. Hi there! I am wondering where exactly you got these stamps? I can't seem to find pretty ones like this! I am from Canada and can't find a lot of these goodies! I have some plain metal stamps that don't even work very well! grr! thanks so much! Melanie from Rustic Farmhouse on fb

    1. I got mine at Hobby Lobby for around $15, but I don't think they have them in Canada. Amazon.com has a variety of them. They might have them at your local hardware store. They can get pretty pricey. The nice thing about these metal stamps is that they can also be used with leather crafting. (Which is what my hubby does for fun.)If you can't find some that you like we can work something out and I'll send them to you. :)

    2. Hi Emily, that is such a thoughtful gesture! really! well I'll tell ya I have been having a heck of a time looking on line for these! there are so MANY other stamps but I only found one set like yours on Etsy but they are SOLD! I go right to the Hobby Lobby site but can't find these kits for some reason! I am going to keep trying to locate some-I would also like a set of regular letters but larger size as well. I wish it was much easier to take a trip over to a Hobby Lobby!!!! I am going to be having a booth for the first time this August and am frantic about making and having everything ready!! will let you know how I make out! thanks again! :))))~Melanie

    5. haha ok so I checked it out-YES those are the stamps I want-now Hobby Lobby doesn't do on line order to Canada-apparently I can call them-they will get my order ready and then tell me what the shipping charge would be (AFTER they get my order ready) really??-then it goes to customs and I would have to pay an additional fees and taxes. ~OR~ I found the same set on Etsy for 38.00! BUT with all the extra fees through Hobby Lobby and at the border it might end up working out to be the same price. the Etsy site also has heart and butterfly stamps for my girls as well so I may as well just go through Etsy. I called Michael's which is the biggest craft supplier in my area and they have one plain set that they just got in-they are behind in what's IN I guess? so anyways I want to thank you for all your help!! that was very thoughtful and greatly appreciated!! now I am going to pour through your blog!! ~Melanie ;)

  5. Where did you come across your spoons? Are they sterling silver? I have a stamping set that I won in a giveaway a year ago but have only found ONE spoon since then that was sterling silver. Okay, let me preface that... I only found one spoon that I would consider affordable in the past year (or maybe I am just too cheap???)

Your "herb" spoons are truly lovely and would make a welcome addition to any garden.

    1. No You are not too cheap! These are just silver plated spoons. I got them at an antique store by me for 3 for $1.00. I think I would only use solid sterling silver if I was doing something for a wedding. Have you checked your local antique store?
