As a kid a used to think that being a pilot would be a ton of easy flying, looking cool, and it could be all done by feel and looking out the cockpit…. not so! There is a lot to learn as a pilot, especially as a military aviator. Many of you that read this might think that it sounds like not much fun, and if you don’t really want to be a pilot you’d be right, but if you really want to be a pilot you’re probably thinking…. THAT WOULD BE SO COOL! I don’t know about you but all of this hard work is worth being able to go faster than sound and do it safely. Who else in this world gets to say that they can go faster than the words that come out of your mouth?
I don’t know how many of you ever watched those movies or TV shows where there is some major catastrophe and the pilot seems to know exactly what is wrong and how to fix it, as if he built the plane he’s flying, and you wonder “How the HECK did he know THAT!?” Well, I am here to tell you that he probably did know exactly what the problem was and how to fix it, if he was doing his job right.
This week we are going over systems and learning the ins and outs of every one of them. Right now it is supposed to be really basic, but when you’re looking at schematics and learning where things are in relation to each other it seems beyond basic to me. As we learn these systems we also learn possible failures, their indications, warnings, causes, and learn what we need to do to correct them; although they are also included in the tons of checklists we have to learn. It’s the level of detail where you would have to be able to trace the path of a molecule of gas from the tank to the engine and name all the major parts that it would pass through. Some of the errors that we learn about haven’t happened so far but an engineer has said that it was a possibility. Which means it is possible that I, or someone in my class, could be the first to ever have to deal with the problemmalfunction.
While this may seem like a lot of doom and gloom to a lot of people the truth is that air planes have less accidents than cars. If you had to check your car and drive the same way that you would have to check a plane there would be a lot less accidents. Cool air shows like the Thunder Birds or Blue Angels are only possible because the people flying learned all of these things VERY well. Even the air shows that are done by people who aren’t in the military are done by pilots that know their air plane, its systems and operating limits inside and out.
