Ladies! I cannot tell you how amazing the 100 yen stores are here in Japan. They blow dollar tree out of the water! I will say that the 100 yen store is probably the biggest thing I will miss about Japan when we move.
Something fun here the spouses do is a combat gift exchange. Let me explain the rules. Each person brings a gift that is 20 or less. When guest arrive at the party they set their gifts down and go mingle. Once it is time to play the game, everyone sits down and pulls a number out of a jar to decided what order they are going to pick gifts in. What makes this a combat gift exchange is the stealing! So say #1 picks a gift and it has a gift card in it. Then it is #2’s turn. She has the option of stealing #1’s gift or opening a new one. So let’s say she opens a new one and it is a date night basket. Now it is #3’s turn. She really wants that gift card that #1 has. So she steals it! It is now back to #1 to pick a new gift or steal a different one. (You can’t turn around right away and steal a gift that was taken from you just now.) So she steals #2’s gift and now it is #2’s turn to either steal or pick a new gift. She picks a new gift and now it is #4’s turn. You go down the line until everyone has a gift. Once everyone has a gift #1 now has the option of stealing a gift and starting a battle then which you have 10 seconds to pick gift or the stealing battle is over. The trick is that gifts can only be stolen twice then the gift is dead and it gets to go home with the owner.
This past year I wrapped the gifts in cellophane. Next year they will be bagged up so people can’t see them.
The stationary here is totally awesome! I pretty much am going to come home with a big stock pile of envelopes and stickers and washi tape. I have always been in loved with cards and letter writing (Even though I am not the best at getting things to the mail box hence the stack of stamped letters I have.)
I used to design and sell cards but hadn’t made any in a while so I whipped up a card that I printed off on my printer here at home from the black card set from Hobby Lobby.
One helpful thing I have discovered with creating baskets, add ribbon to everything and take it out of the original wrappers that often times have text and don’t match with a color scheme.
This was a little basket I put together for the mamasan we had. She would come and clean our house which was soooo nice. They are pretty cheap here so why not get one. I embroidered the face towel and made some foot scrub. She loved it! I’m pretty sure I added chocolate in after this photo!
This is a basket I made for my friend to take the combat gift exchange. I went with a beauty theme on this one too. A personal mirror, headband, pumice stone, scrunchie, comfy socks, foot scrub, emery board, hand gloves, cuticle oil, nail polish, nail stickers, and other goodies!
I hope this has inspired you some. I know I have found that I love giving gifts and seeing face’s light up. I have always loved giving gifts but it is something that I am going to embrace more often!
